MMP (mobile measurement partner)

A mobile measurement partner is the neutral referee between your app and the ad networks you buy from. It decides which network gets credit for an install and tells each one what happened next.

Updated

When an app buys traffic from several ad networks at once, every network would happily claim the same install. An MMP sits in the middle: it collects ad engagement signals from each network, matches them against installs reported by an SDK inside the app, applies one set of attribution rules, and gives every network a single, deduplicated answer.

What an MMP does

  • Install attribution across networks. The MMP decides which tap or view gets credit for an install using a consistent lookback window and attribution model, so two networks cannot both count the same user.
  • Postbacks. After an install or an in-app event, the MMP sends a server-to-server notification back to the network that won the attribution. Networks use these postbacks to optimize delivery toward users who complete the events you care about.
  • Fraud checks. MMPs typically screen for patterns such as click flooding, fake devices and install hijacking, and can reject or flag suspicious attributions before you pay for them.
  • Unified reporting. Spend, installs and events from many networks land in one dashboard with shared definitions, which makes channel comparisons possible.
  • Privacy frameworks. On iOS, an MMP can also receive and decode SKAdNetwork and AdAttributionKit postbacks and manage conversion value schemes for you.

When a subscription app needs an MMP

An MMP earns its cost when you run paid acquisition on several self-attributing or programmatic networks at the same time, and those networks need postbacks to optimize. If you buy from Meta, Google, TikTok and a handful of ad networks, you need one referee, and most networks expect an MMP integration.

The case is weaker when Apple Ads is your main or only paid channel. Apple provides its own attribution for Apple Ads, and the questions a subscription marketer actually needs answered on that channel are about revenue: which campaigns, ad groups and keywords turn into trials, paying subscribers and payback.

The revenue attribution gap

MMPs are strongest at the install. Subscription revenue is harder: trials convert days later, renewals arrive for months, refunds and billing retries change the picture, and store commission has to be handled. Unless the MMP receives accurate subscription events from your purchase stack, its revenue figures tend to be partial or delayed.

For Apple Ads specifically, the gap shows up as a keyword report that stops at installs, or one that shows revenue at the campaign level but not per keyword. Closing it means joining attribution data with the subscription events your app already records, at the granularity where you actually bid.

Questions to ask before adding an MMP

  1. How many paid networks do you run, and which of them need postbacks to optimize?
  2. Does the MMP receive real subscription events, including renewals and refunds, or only the first purchase?
  3. Can it report revenue at the level where you make decisions, such as the Apple Ads keyword?
  4. How will its numbers be reconciled with your store and subscription data when they disagree?

Common questions

Do I need an MMP to run Apple Ads?

No. Apple Ads attribution is available through Apple’s AdServices framework without an MMP. An MMP becomes useful when you also buy from other networks and need one deduplicated view with postbacks to each.

Is an MMP the same as an analytics tool?

Not quite. Product analytics tools describe what users do in the app. An MMP answers which paid source brought each user and reports that back to the networks.

Can an MMP measure subscription revenue?

It can if it receives accurate subscription events, including trial conversions, renewals and refunds. Without them, revenue per campaign is usually incomplete.
